Missing: The Star's poll showing 99% support for Bersih

PETALING JAYA, Jun 21: A poll conducted by The Star Online, the online edition of The Star daily, has found that an overwhelming majority of readers are in support of the July 9 rally in Kuala Lumpur called by electoral reform group Bersih. To the question "What is your view on the proposed Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9?", 99 percent of the respondents chose the answer "It should be allowed to go on", as opposed to the remaining option, "It should be cancelled".

At press time today (9.20 am), the poll respondents were nearing one million, believed to be the highest number compared to other recent online survey questions put up on the website. Among other daily papers with online presence, The Star Online has the highest number of visitors.

The poll comes as the Election Commission made an appeal to Bersih to cancel its rally, saying it would be prepared to hear its demands.

However, Bersih chairperson Ambiga Srenevasan brushed off the offer, saying that the time for negotiation had long been over.

Earlier, some eighty organisations joined hands over the weekend to renew their support for the rally and urged the police to protect their right to peaceful assembly from threats made by a number of right-wing politicians.
